RESIDENT CRAFTS PEOPLE

The role of blacksmith at Amberley was in place long before the Museum.
The original means of transporting chalk and lime around the quarry site was by horse and cart, and a blacksmith was vital to ensure horses were adequately shod and other repairs could be carried out on site.
These days b
lacksmith do not shoe horses as it has become a separate craft since cars became commonly used.

Alex Smith

Amberley Museum and Heritage Centre has a resident blacksmith, who runs the workshop as his own business, Chalk Pit Forge. You can watch him at work on the commission that he is making at the time. This could involve traditional blacksmith skills, such as, forging, splitting, twisting, bending, punching or fire welding hot steel or it may involve designing, painting or joining the product he is working on. Please contact the office or Alex for the days he will be working at the Museum.

Commissions can also be given to Alex. He makes all kinds of beautiful work and his designs are bespoke to the client and the area where the final piece will be displayed. Alex has a degree in Artist Blacksmithing and has experience of making and fitting gates, railings, sculpture, furniture, restoration work, lighting and numerous other items.
