Ray Babbage

Walking sticks can be made out of a wide range of materials, each of which requires an unique approach by a craftsperson to achieve the best result. In making his walking sticks, Ray uses a variety of materials such as hazel, holly, ash, chestnut & blackthorn (his favourite wood) in making the sticks, and burr elm, antler & horn for handles.

His work has been commissioned by a wide range of people, and he has attended numerous country shows where his works have been well received. A member of the Saxon Stick Makers of Sussex, Ray's work is now recognised professionally and publicly alike. Combined with a number of television appearances with celebrities such as Charlie Dimmock (and a live broadcast on BBC South Today), Ray has really become quite a phenomenon!

Ray can be seen in his workshop at Amberley throughout the season, with samples of his wares proudly on show. Always happy to answer questions on his work, and to talk people through the numerous stages involved, Ray's craft seems an almost hypnotic draw for many visitors to Amberley - come and see for yourselves...
