This reconstructed building stood in a council depot at Littlehampton.
It stood at its original site from the early 20th century until 1979, and formed part of the local sewerage system.
Steam powered utilities
The Robey horizontal single-cylinder oil engine inside dates from 1929 and used its 30 horsepower to drive a compressor for supplying high-pressure air to an ejector which raised the town's sewerage for discharge into the sea. Robey & Co. of Lincoln were already a famous steam engineering firm before turning their hand to oil engines in 1894. This engine is typical of the slow-revving horizontal industrial engines of its day.
