An unbeatable collection...
The Museum collection illustrates the history and uses of industrial railways in the British Isles. The collection comprises over 30 locomotives, with examples of steam, petrol, diesel & electric power, along with over 40 varieties of wagons and workmen's coaches. Thirteen different gauges are represented, ranging from 1'6" to 5'3" (.46 to 1.6m), making the collection the most comprehensive of its type in the country. Almost all the operational track is of 2'0" gauge, which became the most common gauge after the First World War. Other sections of 2'0" & 3'2.25" gauge track are also in use on site. As well as the exhibits, a number of exhibition and storage buildings exist to support the collection. The Railway Exhibition & Conservation Hall at Amberley Working Museum includes a working restoration/repair area for visitors to see work in progress in addition to viewing the collection. Throughout the season, free rail travel is provided around site by the volunteers who manage the collection, and a specially adapted coach to accommodate wheelchairs is also available for use. A more involved breakdown of the Rail Collection can be found on its dedicated website, created and maintained by volunteers from the group by clicking here. |
