A number of water-pumping devices are on show outside the Restaurant.

Alongside a 1910 Dando wind pump (used in the James Bond film A View to a Kill) , and near the site of the original quarry borehole, can be found a range of operational hand-pumps for drawing water. As can be expected, these are remarkably popular with children!

Powered by hand & wind

Wind energy has been used for thousands of years to power sailing vessels, pump water and grind grain. Wind pumps like this were developed for agricultural and domestic use.
This wind pump was built about 1910 by Duke and Ockenden Ltd of Littlehampton who were specialist water supply engineers.
The company manufactured pumps under the trade name of DANDO. This one was originally installed at Pulborough.
In 1984, when scenes from the James Bond film A View to a Kill were shot at the Museum, the wind pump was repainted and temporarily moved near to the railway tunnel (by Betchworth Hall) to help create the set of "Mainstrike Mine", a silver mine near San Francisco.
