Peter Fundraising Campaign

Accucraft, who specialise in large scale live steam model locomotives, have donated one of their 7/8”/ft scale Bagnall saddle tank models for the Museum to sell by Sealed Bid Auction. The model runs on 45mm gauge track. The model being auctioned is a one-off version of their standard model, customised to look like “Peter” (without a cab) and finished in the Crimson Lake livery currently carried by the full size locomotive at Amberley. The standard model usually retails in the region of £1200.

The Museum staff, trustees and volunteers are extremely grateful to Graham Langer and Ian Pearse of Accucraft for this generous contribution to our fundraising campaign.

Sealed Bids are therefore being invited for the purchase of this unique model. The auction will run until the end of February 2019 and bids must be received by The Museum in writing by mid-day on Monday 25 February 2019. The bids will then be examined and the winner notified on Wednesday 27 February. Bid forms may be obtained using the download link below, or by post on receipt of an S.A.E. from Gerry Cork, c/o Amberley Museum, New Barn Lane, Amberley, Arundel, West Sussex, BN18 9LT.

“Peter” was built in 1918 by W G Bagnall of Stafford as a 3 foot gauge machine and went to work for the Canadian Forestry Corps at Longtown, Cumberland. After its use there ceased, Bagnall’s reacquired it, converted it to 2 foot gauge and then sold it on to the Cliffe Hill Granite Co in Leicestershire. There it worked until 1949 during which time the name “Peter” was acquired.

By the 1960s “Peter” was in the ownership of the Narrow Gauge Railway Society and became part of the Brockham Museum collection moving to Amberley when the two collections were amalgamated in 1982. “Peter” was restored to working order in 1993 and has been a mainstay of the Museum’s steam railway operation ever since, along with “Polar Bear”, another product of the Staffordshire company.
“Peter’s” last duties before being taken out of service will be on the Museum’s Santa specials.
