COVID-19 Update

Amberley receives emergency funding from the Arts Council

At the end of April, we were delighted to receive emergency funding from Arts Council England to assist with essential costs for May, June and July. This is very welcome news as the closure due to the coronavirus situation has had a devastating impact on the Museum’s finances. This eases some of the immediate pressure, but the Museum still faces significant financial challenges, both for the remaining period when we are closed (however long that may be) but also when we reopen.

The Amberley Trustees and Staff would like to say a huge thank you to all our Members and Supporters for their continued support through this challenging time, particularly through our Just Giving campaign which is now standing at nearly £6,000 and also by continuing to renew your memberships (which will be extended for however long the Museum is closed).  We are also very grateful for the donations that we have received direct. We look forward to welcoming you all back to the Museum just as soon as we can

This upfront investment and support allows you to visit the museum as many times as you like forever representing a significant saving over time as well as discounts in our café and shop. Lifetime memberships also make very special gifts.

Main member:  £400 (usually £500)
Additional member at the same address:  £250 (usually £350)

If you would like to take up this offer or know someone who might be interested, please use the application form at www.amberleymuseum.co.uk/membership, quoting ‘Amberley Angel’ to receive the discount offer.  There are a variety of methods by which to pay and we are also happy to accept payment in three instalments, one in May, one in June and one in July.

Keep in touch

We’d love to hear what the Museum means to you. Please use the tag #MyAmberley and share your thoughts and memories with us. Whilst our doors are shut, we will be sharing memories, exhibits, and stories from Amberley and celebrating events virtually that can’t take place at the Museum at the moment.

Original article – 10th April

It is just over three weeks since we opened the Sculpture Trail and it seems like a lifetime ago. On the 18th March, we made the decision to temporarily close Amberley Museum to ensure the health and safety of our visitors, volunteers and staff. In doing so we have stopped all income following the low winter season when the Museum traditionally survives on the income generated from the previous summer. We are a completely independent museum and registered charity and we receive no funding from local or national government or any other statutory source.

We have immediately reduced our overheads as much as possible but it will still cost a minimum of £12,000 every month (including significant fixed costs such as insurance) to look after and care for our 36-acre site and vast collection. Our work includes looking after our historic vehicles, much loved narrow-gauge railway, electricity and communications collections, plumbers, print shop, craftworkers and much more.  We support the work of our wonderful volunteers, are involved in community projects addressing loneliness and mental wellbeing and deliver our learning and participation programme for local children and families as well as ongoing special events. For 40 years Amberley Museum has been embedded in this community but this closure is now threatening our ability to open again when this terrible situation is over.

We still incur significant costs whilst shut and are losing vital income every single day. Your support could make an enormous difference in making sure Amberley Museum is open for the community and generations to come for another 40 years and more.
