BESOM BROOM MAKING

The besom or birch broom industry has prospered since Saxon times in the sandy heath areas of South East England, where birch grows profusely. Known as besom “squires” the craftsmen were numerous along the Surrey / Sussex border.

The Museum houses a broom making workshop, where the art of besom broom making is sometimes demonstrated by our volunteers.
