THE FRIENDS OF AMBERLEY MUSEUM
The Friends of Amberley Museum exist to support the Museum both financially and through social activities. Friends Groups exist to support many Museums across the country and in an era of threat to museums need to be the conscience, defender, supporter, fundraiser, sounding board and flag waver for them. Here at Amberley we have an active group with the most visible presence in the Emporium (the old Fairmile Café which used to be by the side of the A29 on the road to Slindon). Many a bargain is to be had and we encourage all our volunteers and visitors to have a browse. By purchasing items you are helping us to support the Museum maintain its exhibits, a never ending and increasingly expensive task and we are never averse to receiving good quality books and saleable items. In 2019 nearly £5000 was donated to the Museum to help with projects.
We have also recently arranged quizzes and a talk by the first ever Director about the start of the Museum 40 years ago. We have established a regular book sale in the Autumn and hope to have a summer event at the Museum. We are always looking for other ways to bring the Amberley community together and for innovative ways to fundraise.
All members, volunteers and staff are eligible to be Friends and at present all you have to do is fill in a form – no joining fee – available from the Emporium. The Emporium is also the place to find out more about the work of the Friends or on some days the Chairman can be found driving a bus around the site.
We do also have spaces for volunteers to help in the Emporium and if you really want to get involved we would love to invite some extra people onto the Committee.
